About Bangkok
Bangkok, officially known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon[ and colloquially as Krung Thep (“City of Angels”), is the capital and chief port of Thailand. It is the only cosmopolitan city in a country of small towns and villages and is Thailand’s cultural and commercial centre.
Bangkok is situated in the Chao Phraya River delta in Thailand's central plain. The river meanders through the city in a southerly direction, emptying into the Gulf of Thailand approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of city centre.
Bangkok is as intoxicating as it is diverse; a melting pot of exotic aromas, interesting sights and visual delights. It's a city with infinite layers which you need to explore to reveal its hidden secrets.
Bangkok is one of Asia's busiest air transport hubs. Two commercial airports serve the city, the older Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) and the newer Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), which replaced Don Mueang as Bangkok's main airport.
Although this city is a perennial destination, the best time to explore Bangkok tourism is from November to February. Bangkok temperature during these months is cooler and less humid. Bangkok weather in the winter season is extremely pleasant.
Must Visit Places in Bangkok
Bangkok has a lot more to offer. Here are tourist spots that you should visit:
- The Grand Palace - is a must-visit place for every visitor to Thailand that stands as the most famous landmark today. Ever since it was built in 1782, it served as the home of the Thai King, a royal residence for 150 years. Now it is only used for special occasions or ceremonies.
- Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of Emerald Buddha) - is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace in the Outer Court inside the complex of the Grand Palace, in Phra Nakhon District, the historic center of Bangkok. Many think that it is a Buddhist temple, but it is a royal chapel.
- Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) - is a Buddhist temple that is in the Yai district, on the riverside of Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. It is one of the remarkable landmarks in Thailand well known for its stunning architectural design and decorations.
- Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) - is a first-class royal temple and monastery located in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, that is situated south of the Grand Palace. It consists of two main quarters: a chapel section and another section that serves as a monks' residence.
- Chinatown (Bangkok) - located on Yaowarat Road, is a popular tourist attraction in Bangkok. It is in one of the oldest areas of Bangkok and a home to a large ethnic Chinese community in Thailand.
- Chatuchak Market - is the biggest market in Thailand with over 15,000 stores and 300k visitors a day on average.
- Chao Phraya River - King Rama I named it as the ‘lifeblood of Bangkok'. Another name of the river is ‘Venice of the East' because the river was used very effectively as a canal for farming.
- Dusit Palace - located in the Dusit district in Bangkok refers to the whole complex that's comprised of a series of 13 Royal residence buildings, surrounded by beautiful gardens and lawns.
- Damnoen Saduak Floating Market - is in Ratchaburi Province, Thailand. It is about 100 kilometers away from central Bangkok. It is the largest and most famous floating market among tourist and Thais alike.
